REPORT FROM JAPAN RENJU FEDERATION TRIP TO TAIWAN

  Dear Renju friends.
This time, Japan Renju Federation visited to Taiwan
for development of Renju for Asian area. I report this trip.
When we played The 7th WC in Kyoto, we had the second
Asia committee. Then we promised this trip with Taiwanese
players, Mr. Chang Yi-Feng(La), and Mr. Meritee.

Date ; 2001.11.21-25
Member ; Kyozo Isobe 9-dan, Shinichi Ishitani 8-dan,
Takahiro Kudomi 6-dan, Hideki Nara 9-dan.
Details ;
We took part in two Renju meeting at Taipei and Tainan.
*11.23(Thu) at Taipei
The meeting place is in a tea-shop. Many young people,
about 50 men and women gathered there. Mr. Chang Yi-Feng
is arranging this meeting every week.
This day, Mr. Lin Shieng-Min, Mr. Chung Hsien-Chi, Mr.
A-Meritee and many players had come there. And a journalist
of Japanese Tokyo-Chunichi Newspaper, Mr. Kusama had come
there to collect news. Mr. Isobe called him.
There, we introduced Mr. Lin Shieng-Min's 5-dan diploma from
Japan Renju Federation, and gave some presents from Japan to
Taipei. And we accepted some gifts, thank you.
Then, we played some games against many players as we can
possible. Japanese 4 men lost many games, because every
Taiwanese players are very strong. For example, I (Nara) lost two
games against Miss Yao (17 years old, pretty girl). About this,
Mr. Ando Meritee said, "All Japanese players weak against young
girl ! " I think it is true. Ahaha....

*11.24(Fri) at Tainan
Mr. Chang Yi-Feng brought us to Tainan by his car. And some
Taipei players (Finite, Ikon, Chung, Yao, etc.....) joined us.
Tainan is about 300 Km away from Taipei. We leave Taipei 10
o'clock half, we arrived at tainan 16 o'clock. Because highway
got choked with traffic. But Mr. Chang drove only himself, Xie xie.
The meeting place is in a tea-shop same as Taipei. Many young
people, about 40 men and women gathered there.
We gave some presents from Japan to Tainan. And we accepted
some gifts, Arigatou.
Then, we played some games against many players.
Foo, Taiwan players are very strong too.
After meeting, we went back to taipei by Mr. Chang's driving.

*Summary
We had very meaingful times in Taiwan. We talked with many
friends about Renju, and played many games. I hope this activity
will stand Asian Renju in good stead.
All Taiwanese Renju friends, thank you very much !
See you again at The 8th WC in Sweden, two years later.

1ST GAME OF MEIJIN MATCH

Hello Renju fans!

Nakamura won at 76th move!

Hasegawa was tentative black and selected D3. Nakamura chose white.
Nakamura showed the new (I think) move at 10th move. Nakamura
protected Hasegawa's attacking steadily, and made black double four

ABOUT RENJU NEWSLETTER

The idea of Renju Newsletter is to spread information about events in
the world of renju, go-moku and related board games.

One event is the opening of a Renju Players Club. Another event is the
start of Renju Class Newsletter.

* Alexander Nosovsky asked me to publish information about Yahoo Renju
Club, which I have done twice.

* Ando Meritee asked me to publish the whole content of the 1st
  renjuclass newsletter, which I did.

These last two Renju Newsletters has lead to a discussion between the
two involved, which will not be published further in Renju Newsletter.

However, you can find Alexander Nosovsky's replies to Ando Meritee in
Yahoo Renju Players Club, http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/renjuplayers
where I prefer the discussion is kept from now.

EDITORS GREETING
Dear subscribers of Renjuclass Newsletter,

I am happy to announce the opening of our regular Newsletter. It will
be published frequently and keep everyone updated with all the
information regarding renjuclass and also world renju events. My idea
of having a Newsletter was inspired by Tommy Maltell who created the
Renju Newsletter many years ago. It is a wonderful way of spreading
information. I hope you will all enjoy this! I also hope you will all
be cooperative and help me with infromation and articles. Thank you
so much!

REMINDER ABOUT THE RACE "THE BEST STUDENTS 2001"

Just like in last year, after the end of the year, we will select the
Best Students of the year according to your homework results.

The conditions of selections are shown here:
"Since the homework is the most important condition that shows the
student's activity as well as skill, therefore the selection of best
students is based on homework answers.
There are lots of students who actively submit their homework almost
every week, and there are students whose homework answers are correct
almost every time.
Therefore, we have two big categories - the quantity and the quality
of the homework. Both are equally important categories. Quantity
shows the activity and dedication of the student whereas quality
shows the deepness and preciseness of their homework answer. Quantity
is measured by the number of submitted homework answers, quality is
measured by earned creditpoints. In case of equal points, the places
were determined by additional criterias."

Here you can take a look at the results of last year Best Student
race. http://my.tele2.ee/renjuclass/best2000.html

I wish everyone good luck and more spirit in order to become the
Best!! :)

RENJUCLASS TOURNAMENT

For those who have not been active recently and do not know our
recent activities, I inform that we are currenly playing The 2nd
Online Renju Class Tournament in our speacial tournament server.
There are 37 players taking part in it. The tournament began on
October 1, 2001. Each player has 20 games there. The time limit is 40
days per player. The best players of the tournament will be rewarded
with credit points.

The tournament server database stores all the games, and they are
accessible to everyone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW DOWNLOADS

The most recent update about the download area is about ANDO's BOOK.
We have uploaded the complete "Indirect 2" opening there. It has
nearly 30 pages, and it takes 17 credit points to download it all.

COMMENTS TO NOSOVSKY'S INSULTING MESSAGE

There is one interesting message I found from yahoo message board. I
could not decide first whether to put it here or to Jokes Message
Board. But the tone of the message is serious, therefore I publish it
in General Message Board of Renjuclass.

The author of the message was Alexander Nosovsky, RIF Vice President.

His message:

"Dear Members of Club
You can download Ando Meritee 11 wins at WC with his commentaries
http://my.tele2.ee/renjuclass/my11games.zip
He is the only person in Renju who won 3 times World Championship.
Other players probably can not beat him at all because he earn his money
teaching Renju Taiwanese players, other players has their own
professions.
There is also RenjuClass where students need to analyze variants for
Meritee.
So, he play games which were analyzed whole team of players.
It is interesting to read comentary of such strong player to his games
at WC. "

People who may be do not know Mr Nosovsky very well, I can explain
that he is a person who likes to talk a lot, annoy people, manipulate
with people, and usually does not know much about the facts nor
ethics.

It is a shame that we have chosen him to be a vice persident for
Renju International Federation, since he is just creating confusion
and negative feelings in the world of renju. He is purposely making
up stories to humiliate others. This is very sad. However, I am very
optimistic, and looking forward to see more honest and polite vice
president in the future.

Alexander Nosovsky does not know if I got paid by Taiwan Renju
Association or not. But he is brave to make his conclusions. In fact,
The Association was practically dead when I arrived to Taiwan. The
association owes me over 1 year salary. I taught them for free
because of my optimism and faith to renju. We all see, Nosovsky's
attempt was to find excuses for my result in WC.

Nosovsky says I ask students analyse variants for me, so that I could
use them for my win games.
I think Nosovsky has heard something about our Homework, but he
apparently does not know the content of homework. The homework
questions have nothing to do with analyses of renju openings. I guess
he was just too busy and did not bother to download any of the
homeworks, although they are all 100% available for public download
at www.renjuclass.com. And all the answers as well. So, if someone
thinks there is something valuable for WC preparation, one can
download them for free. Well, It was his another attempt to try to
humiliate my result in WC.

I am not offended. It is because I know him well, and his behaviour
and attitude does not surprise me at all. I just want you all know
what to expect whenever you get in touch with him in the future.

He surely owes an apology to me personally and to the whole
renjuclass. He humiliated me and all of you with his message.

Ando Meritee

----------------------------------------------------------------------

SURPRISING PROJECT FOR 2002 - "WAR OF ROSES"

We are expecting another exciting activity in Renjuclass in coming
year.

We will have a role play with all our class. All 100 people will be
involved with it.
It is called "The War of Roses". Those who know the history of
England, they probably guess what this is all about (The Red Rose vs
The White Rose).
We will split the whole class into two teams, and we will create a
special server where the two teams will play the game in one board.
When it is one team's turn to move, it has 24 hours for that. During
that time, all the warriors of that team must make their vote for the
next move. The system will automatically select the most voted move
in the moment the deadline passes, and submits it to the big board.
We will create more side activities to that "War of Roses" to make it
more playful and even romantic.

Please write your comments and ideas about "War of Roses" to General
Message board of renjuclass.

The software is far from being ready and does contain bugs.

Evelyn Tihkan has done good job with "Renju World" internetversion.
It is possible to read it in address http://www.hot.ee/renjuworld/
Unfortunately I have lost most of files from numbers 32-35, but You
can see all materials from numbers 36-38 and now also World
Championship Extra, which got ready some days ago.

All suggestions, how to make "Renju World" and internetversion better

I prepared homepage about English version of Gorenjer at

RENJUCLASS INFORMATION
======================

Hello renju people of the world!

On behalf of renjuclass I have some information to give all of you.
First of all, our URL is still same as before, www.renjuclass.com.
Besides that you can also use the URL www.renju.net which is our
alternative address and leads to the same website.

Our renjuclass now has 92 students from 20 different countries all over
the world. It is the largest international renju community in the world
where people study hard about renju and make everything to become a
better player.

Our renjuclass students study regularly every week. They attend lessons,
do their weekly homework, etc.

We now have 5 Grand Masters in our class!! Their renjuclass usernames
are luwenzhe (China), ladykayak (Canada), concord2497 (Taiwan), forsaken
(China), jahre (Russia). The title has been given to them because of
their true and dedicated work and study in renjuclass. The condition of
the title was to earn 100 credit points of the renjuclass by showing
renju efforts.

THE FRESH NEWS:
Today, on October 1, the renjuclass began our second official Renju
Tournament. There are 37 people taking part in it. The games are played
in the special Game Server that has been built specially for renjuclass
website.

Everybody is welcome to watch our activity in renjuclass!! If you want
to see how the games are played in either our regular Play Games server
or Tournament server, then you can do it by going to www.renjuclass.com
website, clicking on 'Play Games' link and then you will be shown the
link 'WELCOME GUESTS!'. There you get all the necessary information that
you need for going around in our server.

One more thing: On behalf of renjuclass and 92 eager students I thank
Renju International Federation for supporting our inevitable costs such
as domain name fee (USD 15) and server host fee (USD 60)!
RIF attention and support will help us to grow even bigger and spread
renju all over the world!

See you in our class!

Concluding words from the former president of RIF
=================================================
I congratulate Peter Jonsson to be the new president of RIF. Since
the start of RIF Peter has been a member of the Central Commitee.
Actually Peter was the one to write the proposal for the statues of
RIF. So he already knows a lot about adminstration within RIF. I know
that he cares much for renju. Also the other members of Central
Committee - the old and new members - I also know care very much for
renju so I am sure all the new Central Committee will make a great
job.

I also know the new Web master Frank Arkbo will make a great job. He
also knows a lot about renju and he also cares for renju. He has been
playing renju for about 20 years just as Peter and I.

Tommy Maltell
President of RIF from the start on the 8th of August 1988 till the
General Assembly in Kyoto in August 2001

Opening words from the new president of RIF
===========================================
Dear Renju Friends.

It is a big honour for me to be elected as the president for the
Renju International Federation.

Looking back at my predecessor, Tommy Maltell's 12 years as President,
a lot of things have happened. In that time it was three member
countries and we did not know what we could expect from the future.

RIF made international rules and established the World Championship,
European Championship, Youth Championship (World and European), Women
Championship and Team World Championship. An international rating
list was created. Even computer programs have their own championship.

The Internet revolution made a championship by mail much easier and
quicker. Ten years ago we had to wait for ordinary letters, which was
quite frustrating many times.

The Renju Newsletter is very much appreciated by many players all
over the world.

Globally, the world of Renju is bigger now. The latest years, our
game has gained popularity in some Asian countries. The level of
playing has reached to a higher level.

Personally, I have some visions for the future. Of course it is
desirable to get more member countries, especially in those areas
that still are "white spots" on the renju map. But we must not
forget to work for that renju activities continue in the countries
where Renju already exists.

In order to become more professional we must see that some things
happen. I mean for example qualification for referees. We must have
an open mind about the opening rules, but also pay respect to the
tradition. More books about Renju must be written and published.

The work of the official commissions must be better. I think that the
way of slow progress is better here because everyone of us work
voluntarily.

Finally, I want to thank the former President, Tommy Maltell for his
work during the first 12 years of RIF.

Important, Emergency!!
======================

To participants of 7th Renju WC in Kyoto (All people who come to Kyoto)

I think you are ready to come to Kyoto. I guess you worry the transportation
between Kansai(or Narita) airport and Kyoto Park Hotel. So I tell you how to
come there.

So far, many participants from lots of countries are made entry. They will come
to Japan around QT date. However, we can not assure we meet all participants at
airport, because every country will arrive perfectly at different time. Besides,
if we meet you at airport, the cost will increase and we can not keep members
to meet you. So please come to Kyoto Park Hotel BY YOURSELF.

We will be waiting you for about 3 hours after you arrive at Kansai Airport.
When you arrive at Park Hotel, you will be able to relax in the comfortable
room. I show you how to go to Park Hotel below. We are looking forward to
seeing there.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

*From Kansai Airport

1)Use Haruka Express Cost---\3690(one way per one person) Need Time---about 70
min. Comment---comfortable,easy,fast

2)Use Rapid train You use Kankuu-Kaisoku bound for Kyobashi. You should change
train at Osaka station to Biwako line bound for Maibara,Yasu or Nagahama.(all
train will stop at Kyoto) Cost---\1830(one way per one person) Need Time---
about 2hours Comment---not so bad,cheap,a littel complicated

**Caution! There are two lines at Kansai Airport. You must use JR line not
Nankai line. There is train terminal next to Airport terminal(only one minutes
walk)

*From Narita Airport

You should use Narita Express and leave at Tokyo terminal.( change lines) Then
you should use Shinkansen train to Kyoto. Cost---about \ 16000(one way per one
person) Need Time---about 5hours

**Caution! We have not decided that anybody can meet foreign participants at
Narita Airport. In case of not meeting, I show you how to go to Kyoto.

It is about 2 km far from Kyoto station. So,
1)Use taxi---about \800
2)Use bus---\200 The name of bus stop is "Sanjuusangendou".
3)Walk---\0 but tough!!

**Caution! Look at the home page of Kyoto Park Hotel. I recommend you print out
the map and keep it. http://www.kyopark.co.jp/access/traffic.htm

If you are lost, you had better call phones.
 Kyoto Park Hotel 075-525-3111
 Hayakawa's portable phone 090-8482-5757
**I recommend you should write down this phone number.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have just now 4 candidates for the 5 places
in the RIF Central Committee after the General Assembly in Japan:

Peter Jonsson and Stefan Karlsson from Sweden and
Alexander Nosovsky and Pavel Salnikov from Russia.

All these candidates are according to my opinion very good candidates.
The only question is which will be the main task for each player.

There should be a candidate from Japan
Yoshimi Hayakawa will withdraw)
but no one from Japan seems interested
so member-countries are welcome with suggestions
for the 5th candidate from another country.

Member-countries are also welcome with suggestions
for the auditor as Lars B Melin will withdraw.

I still miss all reports from all RIF Commissions.
