The new winner program in both championships "Blackstone" by Victor
Barikin is now the best program in Renju. Mr. Kawamura former Meijin and
World Champion kindly write about this program : "It is enough strong to
play against top players !" But 2 problems with sure win (tsume renju)
from problems solving championship were not solved by all programs. It
means that it is a lot of work for programmers. All participants are

Björn Wallgren from Sweden has now his own web site:

The most important part of this site is the information
from the Swedish Ranking Committee with start from the
following page:
http://w1.611.telia.com/~u61103681/SLSFs_Rankingkommitte.html

Here you can find the actual rating-list for Swedish
players but you can also find from each tournament how the
ratings have been changed for each player.

Also there is a page with news about all changes.

The site is in Swedish but as the most part of it is
figures you can still understand most of it even if you
cannot understand Swedish.

Info about coming World Championship via e-mail
by Oleg Fedorkin

I have separated participants of semi-finals of V Renju
World Championship via e-mail by lot. I used for it the
same method as it was used a year ago. The RIF Raiting list
is available now, but not all participants have it or even
PbEM server rating. Also it's obvious that some players use
the pseudonyms trying to hide their real strength (or their
actual weakness) or wishing to play more games with strong
players in official e-mail tournaments. So my view of point
is: the players in their groups have to play more games
with the players from other countries. As I think, it's
better for a renju development all over the world.
According this idea I use, as I said before, the method
that counts not only the strength of players but also
separates the players from the same countries into
different groups. Of course, should be the more nice and
effective method of lot, but I don't know it.

Group 1.
1.N.Kawamura (JAP) - norihiko, 2.M.Kozhin (RUS) - jenaro,
3.S.Filippov (RUS) - filippov, 4.B.Wallgren (SWE) - bjornw,
5.V.Egorov (RUS) - evit, 6.Y.Madissoon (EST) - ymadis,
7.M.Lalayan (ARM) - lama, 8.T.Wang (CHI) - tomwang,
9.V.Kolesnik (UKR) - kvik, 10.R.Brown (USA) - guzzle,
11.M.Dumanyan (ARM) - dumh, 12.S.Krasnonosova (RUS) -
odetta.

Group 2.
1.A.Soosorv (EST) - asoosorv, 2.A.Mikhailov (RUS) - almi,
3.V.Barykin (RUS) - vbarykin, 4.R.Johannesson (SWE) -
ratson, 5.S.Sitnik (RUS) - sergei, 6.K.Birk (EST) - katrin,
7.M.Minasyan (ARM) - mima, 8.Zh.Jinyu (CHI) - freefish,
9.I.Rinkis (LAT) - ingus, 10.A.Stepanyan (ARM) - star,
11.R.Samal (CHE) - rsamal, 12.V.Alibabaev (RUS) - alibaba.

Group 3.
1.A.Poghosyan (ARM) - apogh, 2.I.Sinyov (RUS) - sinyovi,
3.A.Nosovsky (RUS) - nosovs, 4.J.Gaulitz (SWE) - joachim,
5.V.Lunkin (RUS) - lunkin, 6.M.Kolk (EST) - mkolk,
7.A.Karapetyan (ARM) - kaar, 8.Zh.Tongxiang (JAP) - s02,
9.E.Gaidamauskas (LIT) - volk, 10.W.Huang (USA) - stfun,
11.C.Tibaldi (ITA) - tibia, 12.M.Dufvenberg (SWE) - dufven.

Group 4.
1.T.Takagawa (JAP) - takagawa, 2.K.Nikonov (RUS) -
vanalaud, 3.P.Salnikov (RUS) - psalnikov, 4.Bengt Asplund (SWE) -
basplund 5.D.Soloviev (RUS) - dsol, 6.J.Lents (EST) - lents,
7.M.Manykyan (ARM) - mamh, 8.M.Carlsson (SWE) - muppin,
9.A.Kobzev (ARM) - kai, 10.A.Lipsits (USA) - alipsits,
11.G.Baggio (ITA) - beppejb, 12.E.Tihkau (EST) - etienne.

I do not know the userids of T.Torstensson (SWE), A.Khramov
(UZB), B.Taylor (NZE). Please inform me about it as soon as
possible! The applicants will be included in the semi-final
groups after information about their userids. Also please
check your userids in the text above and in the case of
mistake please inform me.

I would like to thank the persons which kindly agreed to be
the referees of the e-mail tournaments. So Bengt Asplund
(basp@algonet.se) will be the referee of the final A and
the semi-final group 3. Alexander Nosovsky
(stigma.ltd@g23.relcom.ru) will be the referee of the semi-
final groups 1, 2, 4.

Some important things for players to remember. The normal
time control in the final and semi-finals is 135 days for
each player till 120 move, after 120th move a referee will
fix a draw. In the games between the players from the same
countries the time control is shorter - 115 days till 120th
move. Also a referee will check it. Don't forget about the
rule of 21 days. Only the winners of 4 semi-final groups
will have right to play in the final tournament of 5th
World Renju Championship via e-mail.

Till 22nd December my current e-mail address is
fedorkin@operoni.helsinki.fi,
Till probably 9th January I will be available on the
address fedorkin@libro.genebee.msu.su, later I will return
to Helsinki.

The tournament will start around the 1st of February and
more info will be sent before the start.

With best wishes
Oleg Fedorkin

The Swedish Cup Final 1998

was played the 12th of December 1998 in Alby, Stockholm, between
Stefan Karlsson and Petter Gardström. Petter won the first game in
opening D11 as black. In the second game Stefan played D8 and Petter
played black again. It was a terrible tough game in the end...when
Stefan after 301 minutes put move 106 (also the last move of 30
stones per 30 minutes) the time was up and Petter won by time!

This was the first title for Petter in the Swedish Cup!

Report from China

     *********************************************************************

The Japanese Renju delegation visited Langfang, a city near Beijing,
during Nov.21-22,98. There, the 3rd China VS Japan Renju Competition
     was held.

More interesting than previous ones, both two parties had dispatched
top players to this competition. They were Japanese players Mr.Isobe 9
     Dan, Mr.Hasegawa 9 Dan, Mr.Nara 8 Dan, Mr.Takagawa 3 Dan, and Chinese
     players Mr.Zhang Jin Yu 5 Dan, Mr.Li Dong 3 Dan, Mr.Liu Tong 3 Dan,
     Mr.Su Liang 3 Dan.

In the past 1st and the 2nd competition, because of primary level of
Chinese players, the competitions had acted more like instruction
play. With the upgrade of level in the recent years, Chinese players
gave better performance in this competition.

     Following is the results:

     Round 1

     Nara:Liu Tong 1:0
     Isobe:Li Dong 1:0
     Hasegawa:Zhang Jin Yu 1:0
     Takagawa:Su Liang 1:0

     Round 2

     Nara:Su Liang 1:0
     Hasegawa:Li Dong 1:0
     Isobe:Liu Tong 0:1
     Takagawa:Zhang Jin Yu 0:1

     Round 3

     Nara:Zhang Jin Yu 1:0
     Hasegawa:Liu Tong 1:0
     Isobe:Su Liang 1:0
     Takagawa:Li Dong 0:1

Renju Newsletter No 93 - 1998
------------------------------------------------------

The semifinals in the Swedish Cup 1998 have now been played:

In Uppsala 15-16 of November
Petter Gardstroem - Tord Andersson 2-0

Petter won the first game with opening I11. The second game was extremely
tough with changing initiative between the colours in D11. 5 hour game which
finally ended with timeloss for Tord in a winning position!

In Hoegsjoe 21 of November
Anders Bertilsson - Stefan Karlsson 1-2

Anders started very well with a win as white in D11. When trying to find the
win Anders used a lot of time. Finally after 2 hours and 25 minutes of his
own time he found the correct combination, great play! The second game was a
short one. Anders put I5 and I chose white. Anders made mistakes in the
beginning and the game was lost for him. The third game was a real
fighting-game in D8. Anders tried to get out of theory as black at once and
was successful. It was a very balanced game and a fight for initiative until
33, which was a mistake. 32-32 was a tricky move and white could win with a
beautiful VCT-win after 33-33.

The final of the Swedish Cup 1998 will be played in December between Stefan
Karlsson and Petter Gardstoem.

RENJU-greetings from Sweden

Renju Newsletter No 91 - 1998
--------------------------------------------------

Do not forget to apply to play in next WC via e-mail.
You have to apply at the latest on Friday this week i.e. on November 20th 1998.

-----------------------Observe!!!!!!---------------------
--------Also A-tournament players have to apply.---------

For example in the last tournament one qualified player had not the possibility
to play. Therefore I also have to know if A-tournament qualified players want
to play or have the possibility to play.

10 players have got the right to play next final of WCh via e-mail:
O.Fedorkin, A.Reims, K.Hasegava, R.Kolpakov, Yu.Tarannikov,
V.Golosov, O.Klimachev, E.Bobkov, S.Smirnov, S.Bondarenko

The participants in the WC e-mail tournaments usually are subscribers to Renju Newsletter.
Then it is easy to inform all players about important news. 2 of the A-tournament
qualified players: Kolpakov and Klimachev changed e-mail addresses without annoucing
the new address to me. Therefore I do not know their addresses and cannot send Renju
  Newsletter to them.

When I have tried to send e-mail for a long time and when the letters have not reached
the players I have to take these players away from subscription list.

Only a few of the qualified players so far have applied.

Oleg Fedorkin has announced the tournament on the PBM-server. I have announced it in Renju Newsletter and in some newsgroups on Internet. I do not have e-mail to all players. Please, someone who knows the players qualified for the A-tournament that has not applied - let them know about it and, please, also send me their e-mail addresses. The e-mail addresses I know I have published in the end of this letter.

---------------

The complete form of application should include:

1. The name of participant
2. Userid on PbM server

Reports from the Japanese Meijin final:

------------------------------------
1.
Dear Friends!

Sorry to be late for contacting.

NAKAMURA DEFENDED MEIJIN TITLE!!
------------------------------------------
The 3rd game was played between Nakamura and
new challenger Nishizono at 3rd of Nov.
Nishizono was a tentative black and showed D11.
Nakamura selected white and led the same situation
until 21. Nakamura changed 22 from the second game
and kept defending steadily. However, Nishizono
showed the strong power after that! He attcaked
hard and made a great advantage in the left-low corner.
I believe black had a sure win at the middle of the game,
but black seemed to make a mistake of attacking.
Finally black tried to protect white. On the contrary,
white showed quick attacking after 70. At last white
made black double three with 82.
Nakamura said, "If Nishizono challenges next time,
I am sure I lose."
I think Nishizono appeal his great power except 1st game.
Anyway, Nakamura became Meijin 19th time.
Great job!!

Norihiko Kawamura

----------------------
2.

Dear Tommy,

I am sorry for the delay of the report.

The Meijin-sen 3rd game was played on Nov.3rd (as schduled)
and Nakamura won and he kept his title by 2,5 -0,5.

At the 3rd game Nakamura became tentative black again and
he chose D11 again. This time Nishizono played black. And
the game went same way as the 2nd till 21 except for the
 color.
The challenger started hard attack from 31. When 45 was
played everyone at the game (including Nakamura!) thought
that black won. But Nakamura found the forced defence and
stopped that attack.
After that Nishizono had some chances to make draw, but
he made some mistakes and lost this game.

Info from Doug Earl

Hi,
I just release version 1.0 of Pentay, a shareware game of Pente (for Win95
and Win NT4.0). Please consider listing my web page on your Renju
International Federation web site:
http://www.execpc.com/bitworks/

By all means, download it, give it a try and if you have any comments,
send them my way. It's version 1.0, so it has just enough features, and
it plays just well enough to be released. In version 2.0 (if I ever get
around to it), I'll improve the quality of the play by the computer and
add some bells and whistles.

Thanks,
Doug Earl

Report from Ando Meritee in Chinese Taipei/Taiwan

I am in Taiwan now. I have given the Sagara Renju book for
Taiwan renju association. I tell you, they play really good
renju!! There are more renju players than in Sweden or
Latvia or Estonia. And most surprising, there are lots of
very strong female players. So, in WC in August 1999 the
Taiwan females can be very dangerous for fighting for
medals.

The company Decipher has made a page about Pente. The URL is
http://www.decipher.com/eastwing/pente/

There you can get facts, info how to play and buy a pente
set and info about pente events.

For example you can read:

Gary Gabrel Story
The Pente inventor looks back over the past 20 years and
explains the trials and tribulations of inventing the game.

Tom Braunlich Story
1979 World Champion digs deep into the world of Pente.

YOu can also read as follows:

"It's a celebration! It is the 20th anniversary of Pente
and to celebrate, Decipher is offering special anniversary
editions of the game. The original red tube will show
off a special anniversary sticker. There is a limited boxed
edition which includes an expansion to the rules, a rigid
playing surface and four sets of stones. These stones will
be featured as Ruby, Amber, Onyx and Diamond.

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Pente®, regional
qualifying tournaments have been scheduled around the
country leading up to the 20th Anniversary Championship
Finals on Saturday, October 17 in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma.
Unfortunately I did not know about this tournament before
it was played. The winner of the tournament was
Bodo C. Konze, Jr.

There is a new possibility in AltaVista.
Go to AltaVista with the URL-address:
http://www.altavista.com/
Choose "AV Photo Finder".
Then write a name of a renju player and if I (or someone
else) has published a photo of this player you will soon
the a little photo of this player.
There is also another possibility. Probably you will find a
player which can be found from the RIF photopage you can
choose in AltaVista to see all phtos very quickly.
Example (Both the players mentioned below worked for me and
of course you can try with another player if you are sure
that his photo is on the RIF photopage):
Search for
Shigeru Nakamura (or Alexander Nosovsky)
Out of many photos now a photo of the player will be shown
as the first from left in the top row.
Choose now "About this picture".
Then choose "More pictures from this page".
Then you will see 9 photos from the RIF page with photos
and under the photos you are able to choose 16 other pages
with 9 photos on each page.
In this way you can clickly see many of the photos that are
published on the RIF web site.

36th Meijin Match

Dear my friends!

------NAKAMURA WON THE FIRST GAME---------

Yesterday 1st game of 36th Meijin Match were played.
Nishizono's first challenge was very tough.
Ist game, it started Nosizono's tentative black.
He chose D3 which was his faverate pattern.
Of course Nakamura chose a white. The situation was
exactly same as Nishizono-Kawamura at Meijinsen
Tournament until 11th move. 11th move is very unusual
move because one point farer than the usual.
However, Nakamura has already known that move was bad
I think. 12th move was white' s attack and it seemed
very difficult to protect. There were no chances to attack
for black after that, Nishizono resigned at 30th move by
Nakamura's strong attack.

Friendly Yours, Norihiko Kawamura

Since the start RIF has had as a tradition always to hold World
Championship for single players with start in the end of July and
with end in the beginning of August.

After the Youth-WC in China there were discussions whether we had
to move the 1999 WC tournament in China to another date. However
now I have received information from Mr Na Wei in China that it is
possible to hold the tournament as usual. In his last letter Na Wei
writes that China can organize the 1999 WC from July 27 to August 10.
Detailed schedule will be worked out later.
(Some of the days mentioned above will be for qualification tournament before the
A-tournament starts and some for sightseeing for those players that
have time to stay a little longer)

Still I cannot reach the RIF pages via FTP so you have to wait some

During Meijinsen, two typhoon was coming. It was raining
and windy so heavily in Japan. At Hakone, Nishizono Typhoon
seemed to come.
At 1st round, Nishizono played against Kawamura. He selected
D3 and attacked offensivly for black. However, black had no
victory. But in the middle, Kawamura made a big mistake and
Nishizono could easily win. At 2nd round, Nishizono also selected
black of I11 and attacked offensivly. In the middle, Nara also
made a mistake and Nishizono won. At 6th round, Nishizono
won for Hasegawa at 109th move!! Woo!!
(Hasegawa was terrable start, he got only 0.5 points for 3 round)
At 8th round, Nishizono got a draw against Ishitani. He had 7.5 points for
8 round. On the contrary, Kawamura has kept winning after 1st round,
Kawamura had 7 points. The winner would be desided at final round. At the

It is obvious that only the Swedish team will go to Armenia to play
renju. It is very sad but under these circumstances the tournament
could not be counted as World Team Championship. Therefore the
September 1998 World Team Championship should be considered as
cancelled.

The September tournament of course could be played with participants from
Sweden and Armenia but it cannot be considered as World Championship.

Letter from Albert Poghosyan,
President of Armenian RIF

Dear Mr. Maltell,

We would like to inform you that Renju Federation of Armenia is ready to
hold 2nd World Renju Team Championship.

On this occasion a lot of work has been done for popularisation of renju
not only in Armenia but in other countries too. Representatives from 6
countries will be present as observers.

The following countries have already confirmed their participation on
31.08.1998: Russia, Sweden, Estonia & Japan.

On September 1, 1998 Estonian team cancelled its participation because of
financial difficulties & Japanese team can't draw up their entry visas
because of Russian Consulate in Japan (on September. 2 we've done the all
necessary things for settlement of this question).

Ukraine, Belarus & Uzbekistan teams couldn't settle their financial
problems.

Latvian team didn't contact us. Chinese team didn’t send application.

It's necessary to make arrangements & we must either hold World
Championship with participation of 3-4 teams or postpone Championship
(better for us up to 06.10.1998).

For further development of renju & for supporting the prestige of
Federation it's necessary to think over the followings question: -
financial support of National Federations; - financial support of
International Federation for organisation of World Championship & for
participation teams of modest means; For example, we can provide teams of
modest means with free of charge meals & favourable accommodation in
private houses; organise international tournament with great prize-money.
We can make our contribution & organise such tournament.

If we can't make the necessary arrangements it will have bad influence on
development of Renju.

With best regards
Albert Poghosyan,
President of Armenian RIF
