All countries agreed on excluding 23 proposals from list. So, there are 8 rules remained in the list now. These 8 rules belong to the rules groups A,B and C. In the next meeting we will continue discussing these 8 proposals. The next meeting will take place on March 5, at 12.00pm GMT. The complete list of renju opening rules proposals together with evaluations by RIF Rules Commission: http://renju.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/forum/usr/25/25_41_2.zip The protocol of the 2nd meeting can be downloaded from here: http://renju.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/forum/usr/25/25_41_1.zip The protocol file is best viewed by Classroom Viewer, which can be downloaded from here: http://renju.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/classroom/works24/RenjuClassWorks24..zip The Player's Council is an unofficial body of world top renju players and officials, who represent the majority opinion of their country as well as expert opinion of their own, in order to discuss and find agreement about best possible opening rule proposal. With the help of series of meetings, we hope to select the one and only final choice, so that in May 2006, RIF General Assembly could vote for new opening rule without complications. Every renju country has a right to be represented in these meetings. To get the access to the meeting, please contact me, and I will provide the name and password. On behalf of Rules Commission (Jonsson, Tarannikov, Kawamura and me) I thank all the members of Players Council for active and dedicated participation in the meeting! See you all in the 3rd meeting, on March 5! Ando Meritee Chairman of Rules Commission _____________________________________________________________________ WORLD-WIDE POLL OF RENJU OPENING RULES On February 12, the Players Council had a meeting regarding new rules proposals. We excluded 23 proposals from 31, and 8 remained for further discussions. On March 5, there will be next meeting of Players Council. You can vote for more than one rule choice, if you like.. Please vote for every choice that you like. This way, RIF Rules Commission and Players Council will have better information about public opinion. Enjoy the poll!! The results can be seen right after voting! Good luck with voting! The players Council consists of top players and officials of renju countries. The task of Players Council is to find the agreement between renju countries about the best choice for new opening rule of renju. The following people too part in the first meeting: Hermansson - Sweden Tarannikov - RIF Rules Commission Meritee - RIF Rules Commission Tsai_chiacheng - Chinese Taipei Okabe - Japan Jonsson - RIF Rules Commission Sushkov - Russia Yamaguchi - Japan Song_xian - China Gu_wei - China Karlsson - Sweden Taimla - Estonia Soosõrv - Estonia During the first meeting, the Players Council agreed about the proper criteria which should be used for evaluating all the 31 proposals of opening rules. The 7 criteria are: - the new rule should not be very different from the current rule (the smaller is the change, the better) - the new rule should give more playable (balanced) variants than the current rule - it should be fair to both players (one player should not have too big "home preparation" advantage) - it should be easy for beginners to learn rules and to play by these rules - it should include all or nearly all the existing theory - there should be no strange "far-away" moves be possible during the opening stage - the first move should be in the center During the next weeks, RIF Rules Commission will use these criteria to analyse all 31 proposals and will grade them. After grading the list of 31 proposals will be sorted according to grades. This sorted list will be used in the 2nd meeting of Players Council as a reference, simplifying the work of Players Council and helping to make decisions easier. The first meeting was successful! Everybody made a great effort. The 2nd meeting will be held on February 12, 2006, at 11 a.m. GMT (7pm China time, 8pm Japan time). The meeting protocol is available here: http://renju.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/forum/usr/25/25_39.zip . It is best viewed by the ORC Works program (in Viewer mode). You can download that program from http://renju.compute.com..tw/~renjuclass/classroom/works24/RenjuClassWorks24.zip Every renju player has a right to review the meeting protocol, and send your opinion and comments to the representative of your country, and he/she would then represent your opinion in the 2nd meeting of Players Council. If your country does not have any representative yet, please contact RIF Rules Commission and we will make the username and password for him/her for accessing the meeting room. The forum for discussing renju opening rules proposals is located at http://renju.compute.com.tw/~renjuclass/cgi-bin/forum/forums.cgi?forum=25 You can find all the 31 opening rules proposals there. It is not possible to add more proposals any more, but it is still possible to write comments on these 31 rules. The RIF Rules Commission will review these 31 rules, and exclude the ones which clearly do not meet the requirements of a serious opening rule. During the next 4 months, there will be 4 big online meetings among the officials and top players from renju countries. The purpose of these lobby meetings is to discuss about the rules proposals and to find the agreement between all the member countries about the final choice of a new opening rule. As a result, the General Assembly can have a peaceful and convenient voting for the new official opening rule in May 2006. The first meeting will take place in ORC Virtual Classroom on January 15, at 12pm GMT (that is 8pm by China time and 9pm by Japan time). In order to have an effective and constructive discussion, the number of people in that meeting will be limited. But nevertheless the meeting will be public - the full records of each meeting will be published on the website so that everybody can read it and react on it by contacting his country's representative. That way, the representatives in those meetings do not only express their own opinion, but they also bring out the majority opinion of their country. During the coming days we will try to reach the officials and top players from each country to ask if they wish to participate in these meetings. There will be about 1-5 members from each country. In addition, the Rules Commission members will participate there - Jonsson, Kawamura, Tarannikov, Meritee. There will also be one meeting in February, March and April. Our hope is that at latest by April meeting, all the RIF member countries have unofficially agreed among each other about which rule will be chosen in May 2006. After that the official decision making in General Assembly will be easy. _____________________________________________________________________ TALLINN OPEN 2005 During December 28-30, 2005 the annual international tournament "Tallinn Open" was played.
